Obama’s Changes in Military Policy Are Driven Less by Philosophy than by Economic Reality

Loring Wirbel

While visiting a newly expanded U.S. Army base with StratCom connections, the delegates in South Korea saw almost a dozen mobile PAC-3 launchers parked beyond the razor-wired fence, described as “the world’s most advanced, capable and powerful terminal air defense missile.”

It is virtually impossible nowadays to talk about any military related activities or events in South Korea without tracing them back to U.S. Strategic Command.

Taking an Economic ‘Wrong Turn’:
How Our Chance to Build a Sustainable Economy Is Being Undermined

Hendrik van den Berg
UNL Professor of Economics

From a long-run perspective, the partially successful fiscal stimulus (at best, fiscal stimuli can only soften the fall) may actually make it more difficult to achieve a sustainable global economy. As long as things do not get much worse, there won’t be any political pressure to bring about real economic change.

A Bit of History

Catlovers Against the Bomb

The 2009 calendar is the 26th successive calendar. Esther Cope, DeCourcy Squire and Bill Waters, inspired by a CAT LOVERS AGAINST THE BOMB button from England, started the project to benefit Nebraskans for Peace.

After some discussion they came up with the 1984 CAT LOVERS AGAINST THE BOMB (CLAB) wall calendar as a way to reach out to others of like mind — and to cat lovers who were not yet against the bomb.

Their ideas captured the imagination of others in Nebraskans for Peace with the late Betty Olson continuing as editor for many years. Since her death in 1999, publishing of the calendar has been the project of the CLAB Editorial Committee. Friends of CLAB make up an informal network of cat lovers promoting peace and justice.

The connection between cat lovers and peace lovers is a phenomenon many have observed and is accentuated in the unique matching of cat photos and thought-provoking quotations in the calendar.

All profit from sales of CLAB calendars and CLAB merchandise supports Nebraskans for Peace, a statewide advocacy organization working non-violently for peace with justice through community building, education and political action.
