"The many debts that we have been building up will leave our children with an economy that may be 20% poorer than the one most Americans think they are leaving them."

As of August 2008, calculated by UNL Professor of Economics Hendrik van den Berg, the Iraq War had cost Nebraskans $3.9 Billion.

With a ballooning budget deficit, gasoline hovering around $4 a gallon, a deflated housing bubble and looming catastrophes in health care, energy systems, and with our nation's infrastructure, Nebraskans For Peace will continue to document the negative economic impacts of our war adventures in the Middle East. When all the money goes to war, it's hard to spend it on anything else. We can't have both guns and butter.

Check back for updates on how we are 'Goin' Broke Paying For War.' Mark your calendars for the 2008 Annual Peace Conference in Lincoln on October 18. University of New Mexico Associate Professor of Accounting Michele Chwastiak will speak on the economic costs of the Iraq War.
