Tri County High School Senior Karen Jantzen of Plymouth, Nebraska submitted the top essay for the 2009 NFP College Scholarship Essay Contest, writing on NFP’s “Turn Off the Violence” Priority. This fall, Karen plans to attend Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she will spend her first year with the university’s “Outtatown Discipleship School.” Her winning essay is printed below.

Please consider supporting young peacemakers like Karen by contributing to the NFP Scholarship Fund. Essays are submitted in each congressional district and are judged around NFP priority issues. Each district can have one $500 scholarship winner and two $100 winners. To contribute, make your check to the “Nebraska Peace Foundation” (marking in the ‘memo’ that it is for the NFP Scholarship Fund) and mail care of: NFP, 941 ‘O’ St., Suite 1026, Lincoln, NE 68508.
